FAQs:
- Is there a Women’s March this Year?
- Yes! TRRR has officially partnered with March on Texas and Melissa Fiero (lead organizer of last year's Austin Women's March) to bring you the Texas Handmaid’s Procession and 2018 Austin Women’s March and Rally Day Austin on January 20th, 2018. (See our event guide for full details!)
- The TRRR\Texas Handmaids\March on Austin co-ordinated march described here is the ONLY permitted march on Jan 20, 2018 that APD and DPS are aware of
- The 45th TX Roe V Wade Rally is an annual event in it’s 4th year. We decided to join forces with the Texas Handmaids and March on Texas to bring you this unique day of activism when the original organizers of last years march decided they were unable to do the Austin Women’s March again this year.
- Going forward, TRRR plans to make the Austin Women’s March an annual event in conjunction with their Roe V Wade Rallies. Like the TRRR Facebook Page or sign up for our mailing list to get updates about future events!
Do these events have permits? - Yes, the Impeachment Rally, the Texas Handmaids Procession\Austin Women’s March, and 45th TX Roe V Wade Rally are fully permitted and cleared with APD, DPS, the State Preservation Board, and the City of Austin.
- The Women’s March and Rally Day Austin is the umbrella event that combines these three permitted events.
What is the schedule for the March? - Please see our event guide here for full details and a schedule.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
- No ID is required
- This event is open to all ages, and there will be a table for the kids with coloring and bubble activities if the weather allows.
- The children's table will be set up in the shade of the Great Walk in the spot closest to where the crowd area will be, so that you can be close to your kids. We will secure some volunteers to help supervise the area, but please remember that they are not babysitters they are activity facilitators.
- IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PARENTS: Due to the fact that this is a reproductive justice event parents should be aware that there will potentially be detailed discussion of various reproductive justice topics including abortion access, birth control, rape, domestic violence, survivor issues, racism, and other forms of societal oppression. Please exercise your best parental judgement about your children's maturity, age, and sensitivity in your decision whether or not to bring your them, but be assured that they are welcome as long as they are supervised by an adult!
- The event organizers feel that it is important to include the option for parents to bring their children both to support activists who many not be able to secure sitters and need to bring their kids, and as a valuable educational opportunity for older children for parents who wish to educate them and inspire them about Reproductive Justice Activism in the State of Texas.
What can I bring into the event?
- We highly encourage rallygoers to bring a reuseable water bottle to fill at the many water fountains inside the Capital building.
- We suggest that you bring your own chair or a blanket to sit on so you can relax while you listen to the program.
- There is lots of shade along the Great Walk and around the Carriage Stop of the South Steps where our stage will be, but you're welcome to bring an umbrella. Bring sunscreen if you think you may need it though.
- Bugs typically aren't an issue in January in the middle of the day, but you can bring bug repellant if you need it.
- Signs and banners are encouraged, however State Preservation Board rules prohibit any handles or sticks for safety reasons. No signs can be affixed to capital property including railings, benches, or trees so be prepared to hold your sign or lay it on the ground.
- Please remember that in order to go inside the capital and use the restroom, you will have to pass through TX DPS airport style security and your bags\purses will be x-rayed so budget a little extra time in case there's a line. You will also have to pass through a metal detector search. So, don't bring anything prohibited like drugs, alcohol, or weapons (all 3 are strictly prohibited at this event).
What should I wear?
- We will are selling official TRRR 45th TX Roe V Wade Celebration t-shirts. Get yours here!
- Orange is the main color associated with the reproductive rights movement here in Texas. Purple is the color associated with domestic violence, but it is also associated with reproductive justice like orange. Most people will probably be wearing Orange as in past years.
- Please wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.
- Be sure to wear comfortable non-slip shoes that adequately protect your feet for your own safety.
Are dogs allowed?
- Service Animals, Emotional Support Dogs, and calm crowd friendly Pet dogs are allowed on the Capitol Grounds and welcome at the event, as long as you are prepared to clean up any poop.
- Remember that only Service Animals are allowed inside the Capitol, and that the restrooms are inside. If you do not have an ADA Service Animal you will need to make arrangements for someone to be able to stay with the animal while you pass through security and go inside to use the restroom.
- Please take into consideration the temperament, training level, and ability of your dog to handle crowds and loud noises. We will have amplified sound with speeches, spoken word performances, and music and there may be a large loud crowd. Please remember that dogs have much more sensitive ears and some dogs may be more easily overwhelmed. If you are uncertain, I would suggest leaving your pet at home for his own comfort and safety, but it is each pet owner's responsibility to know and judge the ability of their pet to handle this event!
